“Become the Slayer in an epic single-player campaign to conquer demons across dimensions and stop the final destruction of humanity“

In the last year I owned my PS4, I started to branch into a few new series. Those games included the likes of Final Fantasy VII Remake, Hollow Knight, and Doom (2016). I had a few friends who owned Doom and one who specifically mentioned that it was “kick-ass” so naturally I had to check it out.
That description was spot-on because Doom was a sweet game. Fast-paced FPS where you just absolutely obliterate all of your enemies in a fantastically gory fashion. There was some exploration involving finding keys to access another section of the level to progress forward which I didn’t think fit particularly well, but outside of that game was hella fun (no pun intended).
I waited to pick up Doom Eternal until I was somehow able to get my hands on a PS5 (thanks Sarah!). The PS5 version offers both fidelity and performance modes – I’ve always been the person who picks fidelity mode and the game looks solid, although I only really took moments to appreciate how well the environments looked within the Fortress of Doom and not anywhere else in particular. If I do another replay in the future, I’d choose performance mode as I think it would complement the pace of the game even more.
The gameplay is relatively the same, “rip and tear until it is done”. In Doom Eternal there’s a bit of a method in how you tackle large groups of enemies, as you have to learn how to use your entire moveset. You have to constantly be on the lookout for when you should burn enemies for armor, use ice grenades on quick enemies, and most of all use the chainsaw to retrieve more ammo. The chainsaw in Doom (2016) had the same purpose, however this time around you HAVE to use it to get ammo. In the beginning I found myself low on ammo all of the time and couldn’t figure out if I had just gotten worse at the game or was missing something. It’s not hard to implement the new playstyle but it can be slightly off-putting.
When I finished the story, I had to buy the Ancient Gods DLC. I wanted more of what the tale had to offer and all the gore, and it was worth it. If you take down the Icon of Sin at the end of the main game only to fight “Satan” in the DLC, who am I to refuse? The final boss fight was certainly intense and the extra content in general was an enjoyable challenge. I did not try multiplayer, curious as to what it’s like.
As much as I’m looking forward to a Doom 3 in this series, it’s hard to imagine where a sequel could go with the story. Perhaps another reboot? Guess we’ll have to find out.
