The Legend of Zelda: Majora’s Mask

Majora’s Mask follows Link, who on a personal quest ends up in Termina, a world parallel to Hyrule. Upon reaching Termina, Link learns that the world is endangered as the moon will fall into the world in three days

I did it. I finally beat every 3D Zelda game. You would think considering how big of a Zelda fan I am that I would’ve done this by now. I beat Majora’s Mask on N64 online and I can thank suspend points for that because this is a stressful game.

If you’re not familiar with the concept, Majora’s Mask throws you into a new world that you have to save within 3 days or else a huge, creepy moon will crash into it. You still have the Ocarina of Time from the previous game with the ability to slow down time, skip forward, or restart the day cycle all over again. Is your journey manageable? Absolutely. Can you explore dungeons or do side quests at your usual pace to figure things out? HELL NO.

I tried beating this when I was young on the N64 and then again on the 3DS (handheld games just aren’t my thing so I fell off on that version halfway through). The suspend points helped me out so much in the second half of the game. For example: the Ikana Castle boss fight – I backed myself into a corner and seriously did not want to start the entire area over again, so being able to restart where I messed up and learn the attacks to win the battle helped me a ton in this situation.

Something I learned about Majora’s Mask that I had no idea before is that the game is like 60% side quests. There’s 4 main dungeons and out of the 24 collectible masks, I think only 6 are mandatory to move through the story. As of this writing I have 12 and I expect to get them all some point.

Oh and this is a very dark game. The themes / messages the game tells went over my head as a kid. The video below will give you an idea of what I’m talking about.

While not my favorite Zelda, Majora’s Mask is such a unique game and story that I would argue it stands out more than some of the other 3D Zeldas. Maybe some day we’ll get a HD version of it or something.
