The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

When an evil magician named Agahnim begins kidnapping young maidens in Hyrule in a quest to break the imprisoning seal on Ganon, a young boy named Link is called upon to stop him

If you’ve read some of my previous posts about The Legend of Zelda, you’ll know that I’ve never been into the 2D games. They failed to capture my attention as a kid, and I always struggled with navigating in the overworld to where I was supposed to go.

In 2022 I finally managed to finish all 3D Zeldas (and complete the Breath of the Wild DLC), this was also when we didn’t know the official release date for Tears of the Kingdom. I had this insane Zelda craving hit me and decided to finally try a Link to the Past. While I used a guide to help me with the second issue I stated above, I actually managed to beat the game…and enjoyed it!

I have to applaud the game’s soundtrack, because there are some songs that I put on as background music during my day job. I figured the older games music wouldn’t make any impact, and I was wrong. Visually speaking it’s a decent looking 16-bit game, even with Link’s hair being pink (this was a decision made by developers so Link’s hair wouldn’t blend in with the rest of his model, still a little weird).

I will admit I used save points on SNES Online, however it saves so much time than having to navigate back to where you may have died during a boss battle. Another reason why I used a guide is because there are a few dungeons in the Dark World where a majority of rooms are unnecessary to go through, and I had no desire to deal with that. The dungeons were entertaining to experience, and the boss battles were engaging. Except Mothula. That guy sucked.

If you’re trying a 2D Zelda for the first time, do everything in your power to unlock fast travel. I cannot express that enough. Definitely give this game a shot with a guide to help with getting around!
